SM’s Big Energy Solutions Can Fit Into Everyday Home Life

MANILA, Philippines – Over the years, SM Supermalls has implemented its energy efficiency strategy at scale— deploying solutions from rooftop solar installations to smart cooling systems that keep large mall spaces comfortable while managing energy demand.

Here are some tried and “mall-tested” insights and energy-saving practices that can be adopted for the home while cutting energy costs, reducing energy waste, and supporting sustainable daily living.

The ‘Active Use’ Rule

One of the simplest ways to save energy is also the most impactful: switching off lights and devices when not in use. This small, intentional habit reflects a broader mindset of care for both resources and surroundings, while reducing energy costs and easing the wear and tear on appliances.

Devices left on standby also create phantom loads that account for 5% to 10% of residential energy consumption. Unplugging appliances at the end of the day or using UL-certified power strips to prevent electrical hazards can reduce monthly energy bills.

Check Energy Labels

According to the Department of Energy (DOE), in addition to using electricity efficiently, consumers are encouraged to choose products and appliances that meet recognized energy-efficiency standards.

The Philippine Energy Labeling Program (PELP) of the DOE is a national energy labeling system for energy-consuming products (ECPs) based on performance. This five-star energy rating informs consumers at the point of sale – the more stars on the label, the greater the energy efficiency, with five stars indicating the highest efficiency and three stars representing an average performance.

Solar Energy for the Home

For SM Supermalls, leveraging rooftop solar panels helps ease the pressure on the grid while ensuring mall spaces remain reliable for its communities. Since its first installation at SM City North EDSA in 2014, it has expanded across 69 malls – proving that onsite renewables can become an integral part of everyday life.

On a smaller scale, solar home systems also offer a practical way to reduce grid demand while helping reduce monthly energy bills. Investing in professional installation, regular maintenance, and fire safety precautions to prevent electrical shocks and structural issues is key to greater energy stability and long-term comfort at home. As solar technology becomes increasingly affordable, it is a viable option for meeting everyday energy needs.

These practical energy-saving strategies at home can help support a more sustainable future. The SM Green Movement demonstrates how small, consistent energy-saving efforts make a difference. Together, we create collective action that can spark a nationwide movement toward an energy-efficient Philippines.

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines, March 2026 - SM Supermalls unveils SM City Zamboanga, its 90th mall in the Philippines, designed as an architectural expression of the culture and artistry of the Zamboanga Peninsula. The mall translates the city’s rich visual traditions into a contemporary lifestyle space where design reflects identity, heritage, and movement.
